Modified images in IPhoto with Photoshop Elements 6

Hi all - new to iMacs and the forum!

I hope the following makes sense and I've no doubt there's a simple solution for an ageing newbie!

I have recently started using Photoshop Elements 6 as the default external editor and I'm "losing" images that i change. For example when I save an image that I've modified in Elements as a different name e.g. "BigBen.jpg" saved as "BigBen_cropped.jpg" I can't see it in IPhoto in the original album e.g. "London" even though the "save as" path is correct. By using Finder I can find the new image in ///IPhoto Library/modified/2008/london/ Where it's saved as an Adobe Photoshop Elements JPEG File. If I don't rename the image it will save in the "London" album having overwritten (if allowed) he original.

The only way I can get the modified (i.e. renamed) image back into the correct album is to save it to another (non IPhoto) directory or desktop and then re-import it.

I've no doubt missed something very fundamental here!

Many thanks

Terry

Re: Modified images in IPhoto with Photoshop Elements 6

When you say "album" do your mean the albums on the left pane in iPhoto? Or do you really mean the "roll" or "event" (depending on which version of iPhoto you have) on the right side? If you are actually talking about the former (album) you will need to drag the photo from the roll or event to the album. The albums only show the aliases of photos that you have actually moved into them.

If you are talking about the latter (roll or event), I can't help you as I have not experienced this. Is the naming convention an allowed convention?

Please give us more information about what version of iPhoto, OSX you are using, etc. and perhaps we can help some more.

-Hi,

I have an older version of iPhoto, but you should have the option in iPhoto's preferences to edit photo (General Tab) 'Selet Application' -->PS for editing. Also with the newer iPhoto '08 I thought you could right click/control click on a photo from the Library and a dropdown menu gives you the option to edit with external application. Might check it out...

Re: Modified images in IPhoto with Photoshop Elements 6

Hi -Terry,

Not sure there is a way. I tried a long time ago to edit images from my ~/Pictures/iPhoto Library/Originals and couldn't change the name to stay in the iPhoto Library. There might be a way I'm not aware of though. I always edit before Importing to iPhoto.

Hi- I am trying to understand what you are trying to do here. If I am following you correctly you want to change the name of the photo you edited in PS and you are hitting the "Save As" option.
If thats the case I think by default the Save As option will save your picture to a different location which as you see is your photo library but I think you have to first import it into iphoto in order to view it inside iphoto.

The only way I can get the modified (i.e. renamed) image back into the correct album is to save it to another (non IPhoto) directory or desktop and then re-import it.

Yes you are correct.Saving it to your desktop then import it back into iphoto. That will be one option.

Why don't you just change the name in iPhoto?

If I don't rename the image it will save in the "London" album having overwritten (if allowed) he original.

Yes it will over write the original image. But.....

The other option would be to make a duplicate of your photo in iphoto then open the duplicate in PS edit it the save it then in iphoto change the name. that way you will preserve the original.

But if that is what you are looking for in an app maybe you should look into purchasing Aperture. Aperture will automatically make a duplicate for you then you can edit it and save it in Aperture as whatever name you want. You still will have to name your photo inside Aperture like you will in iPhoto.

Hope that helps.

Re: Modified images in IPhoto with Photoshop Elements 6

-Hi,

I was trying to do exactly what you are doing. Some time ago I had preferences set for iPhoto to launch all the photos from our digital camera. After learning that Image Capture (in apps folder) alows you to set the preferences to launch when connecting to camera I never looked back. So after setting the preferences in Image Capture to launch I now select just the pixs I want and they go into a folder on the desktop for PS editing and then import to iPhoto. HTH...

Re: Modified images in IPhoto with Photoshop Elements 6
That was a good idea that Dougster suggested.

The is really no reason to go into the iphoto library package file. For the reason of corrupting your library. if you need to access your pictures from other apps then use this.

http://www.karelia.com/imedia/

But stay out of the library package thats how things get corrupted.

One work around was suggested "would be to make a duplicate of your photo in iphoto then open the duplicate in PS edit it the save it then in iphoto change the name. that way you will preserve the original. and change the name inside iPhoto."

And a second by Dougster.

You might look into this http://www.iview-multimedia.com/mediapro/.

If you are into alot of processing photo you might also look into Aperture.

Hi -Terry,

I agree with -H_H about messing w/in iPhotos Library. iPhoto like's its Library left alone. Some members might disagree but I've found doing the major editing FIRST makes iPhoto happy. ...and if you do check out Aperture feel free to post back with your thoughts. Thanks...

Re: Modified images in IPhoto with Photoshop Elements 6

Hi Terry

I think you're trying to do something too complicated - no need to get into messing with library files etc.

You just need to adapt to a workflow iPhoto likes.

a) find the photo you want to edit

b) duplicate it Command-D, so you get the original photo and copy of original photo both in your library, in the same event

c) edit the duplicate - opens in Photoshop elements, do what you like to it, save (not save as)

you're left with the original photo, clean unedited, and the copy with your edits.

I think this is what you were trying to achieve, it's simple and it doesn't require Aperture, or any messing about in library files.

Hope this helps,
