Well, he was a Stooge for only a year. If you want to talk overlooked Stooges, how about [Curly-Joe|http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Curly-Joe_DeRita]? I saw Moe, Larry, and Curly-Joe perform live at the Circle Star Theater in San Carlos, CA in my formative years. CJ had the moves, but he was no Curly.
I know you, like me, like every boy our age,. . .
Chris, I believe I am a boy about your age, but I HATED the Stooges as a kid. I thought Moe was a prick and my blood would boil every time he was on the screen. I just had to get that off my chest.

It was interesting for a couple of reasons. First, they were really old, as they should have been. Remember that a lot of the Stooges episodes we were most familiar with were filmed when the boys were in their late 30s. By the time I saw them, they were well into their 60s. The contrast was startling for a kid who saw them as timeless. Also, there was a Stooge resurgence at the time and, as I hinted in this hardly serious blog, parents were concerned about what their kids were picking up from all the slapstick violence. Moe made a point, at the end of the show, to tell us that we should not try any of this stuff at home, particularly the eye-poking. "Even I miss sometimes." After that I'd watch the movies differently, to see exactly what he did (he aimed just above the eyes). I'm not sure it took much of the fun out of watching the Stooges, but it was a good reminder that what was funny on screen was a bad thing in real life.

Yes, Chris. Sometimes I wonder what these folks are thinking when they put these packages together and so goof them up. BTW, those were my also four channels: 2, 4, 5, and 7, in that order.

I think, Chris, the most important take-away message from your blog post is this: Do +not+ play with blasting caps.

I agree. Today — as 40 years ago — the San Francisco Bay Area landscape is littered with blasting caps. Why I tripped over three of them while retrieving the morning paper. I'd like to see Mr. Mays reprise his PSA to warn the current generation of young people of their ever-present danger.

Re: Save our Stooges!
A local station here plays the Stooges sometimes in primetime when a game has been cancelled, or on a holiday, and it has all that extra junk in it too. I heard the station got a lot of complaints that it ruined the episodes, but they said that company held the copyright and that is the only way you can broadcast them now.

RE: the re-packaged episodes and copyright, maybe Steve is simply a victim of circumstance? I'm sure he's pure as the driven snow, only he drifted a little. Nyuk, nyuk, nyuk.

Re: Save our Stooges!
Yeah, that's a no purchase for me. On the bright side, I live in a state with such a poor economy that no one can afford blasting caps.

You mentioned Mayor Art and Captain Satellite, but don't forget about Sir Sedley. He showed Three Stooges shorts every weekday on channel 2 when I was a kid.

I thought you were talking about Iggy Pop's Stooges. Now that, I could care about, but this? No.
