My MacBook does not remember my preferred app for file-type

Hi,

I have a problem with my MacBook that's driving me slightly crazy. When I try to change the default application for a file-type, it doesn't "stick". I can use Get Info and Change All, and that works until the next shutdown. Once I restart, I'm back to the default applications. So for example, Safari is reset to my default browser even though I've set Firefox as my default, and Quicktime is reset to my default video player for avi files, even though I've changed that to NicePlayer.

When I first got my MacBook, I used to get an obscure error message when trying to change the default application for a file-type, but that has since disappeared.

My userid is set up as admin. I'm running version 10.5.4.

I never had these problems with my iMac, so I don't understand why my MacBook is behaving this way.

Help! Any ideas?

Thanks,

Dave.

Dave, if you aren't running File Vault (Why would a sane person do that?),
the simple answer is that your LaunchServices data base is munged. I
use TinkerTool System:

http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/21156

It costs €7 (approximately 347 Bush dollars). Among the other useful things
it does is rebuild the LS data base (User/LaunchServices).

Other apps will do a similar job. Unfortunately, memory is iffy at my age.
