I was talking about the latter. But I've just accidentally solved the issue. Some time ago I've installed an application that shows you a live picture of the earth (it's called earth desktop or smth.) Anyway I wasn't using it for some time (it was turned off) but upon cleaning up the unused apps on my mac today I decided to remove it and when i did it also solved the desktop problem. So it seems to me that the app was the culprit. It must have messed up with the configuration files. Now I'm very happy having reclaimed my desktop
