Re: Original iPhones come back to life as iPod touches
Hello,

If anyone would like to donate an original iPhone (or a 3G for that matter) to someone with brain injury who can use it to compensate for their deficits, I will make sure it gets to them. My webpage is www.BrainInjuryChaplain.com. If you are interested, please send me a private message or email me.

Blessings,
Patrick

An original iPhone almost seems better to me than an iPod Touch (other than the recessed headphone jack). The iPod Touch doesn't have a speaker!

iPod touches don't have cameras, either.

Thats a really good point. Also, a microphone. How can you use recording apps on a normal iPod Touch?

Don't forget that a disabled iPhone can still be used as a regular phone while you're at a wifi hotspot, using VoIP software.

I plan to give away my old iPhone to a friend who cannot afford one for himself, though.

I'll keep the original Iphone, I am very happy with it I have no problem connecting to the internet where ever I am and I don't have to pay AT&T an extra 15.00 a month for the same service.

How would it be even the TINIEST bit legal for Apple to brick peoples iPhone Classic. There would be hell to pay once that came out. I'm surprised that you would expect any less than what actually happened.

The iPhone isn't really "disabled" is it? If you put a sim card in it it's still a fully functional phone, right?

I would say it's probably also a backup phone if your iPhone 3G goes in for service or runs out of juice, and it's an emergency phone. I believe it should still be able to call 911, even without a SIM card.

Re: Original iPhones come back to life as iPod touches
So can I buy an iPhone from a friend and use it as a touch?
Would I have to erase all the data when I plug it in to my iTunes?

Now for Apple to give the Touch the same features as the original iPhone, (mics, speakers, video...) and re-release it at a cheaper price... ;)

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but according 'geniuses' at two different apple stores, a de-activated iPhone1.0 can used as an ipod touch -only- until you re-sync itunes. After that, it's a brick.

This isn't correct. I'm using my original iPhone, synced with iTunes on two different Macs (so far), to test apps for reviews.

I've heard that it will act like a brick if you have a SIM card in it. If, like me, you got a new SIM, you may need to pull the old one to get the iPhone to work properly without cell service.
