A simple guess would be that it consists of security fixes and nothing else. Much like updates to Tiger these days.

No offense, but what's with the title of this piece? "Quietly?" What, were they supposed to make a press conference out of it? Just makes it sound deceptive, like they are trying to sneak it in there, when they're not. It's just an update.

Deception is in the ear of the beholder. Apple does indeed make a press conference out of some of its releases. In this case,. it didn't — it released it without fanfare, or "quietly." Had I meant "sneakily" or "stealthily" or "malevolently" I would have used that in the headline.

Chris, I want your job. I do the same thing and my wife tells me to get a job.

Partly to lord it over other people. ;)

Seriously, for situations like this where I have to compare a couple of software revisions or test differences in battery life. For example, in this case a few folks around the Web claimed that the 1.1.5 update radically improved the touch's performance. Of course, this was in their minds because they didn't have the previous software to compare it to. Having two iPods side by side let me test that claim and it proved to be false.

Re: Apple quietly releases iPod touch 1.1.5 update
it was released because people were figuring out how to get the 2.0 update for free through iTunes. Having the 1.1.5 update it now blocks you from being able to upgrade to 2.0 for free. I highly doubt that it even has bug fixes, just insuring that they, meaning apple, make their money.

Here's something to look for: When typing in a web address, hold down the ".com" key and see if you don't get some other alternatives such as .edu, .net and so on. This appeared in 2.0. It's just a refinement so may have gotten included in 1.1.5.

Nope, it's not there in 1.1.5.

Re: Apple quietly releases iPod touch 1.1.5 update
My, my... first, Apple charges for iPod Touch updates and comes up with an accounting rationalizing that other accountants say is hogwash. Yet Macolytes unsurprisingly defend Apple.

And now we have Apple providing another update for free. Hmm.... Why is this free? I thought they were 'required' to charge?

For the same reason an update from OS X 10.5.3 to OS X 10.5.4 is free and an upgrade from OS X 10.4 to OS X 10.5 isn't?

Update versus upgrade. Pretty simple.

Apparently not simple enough for some people.
