synching contacts to iPod

I just removed a large quantity of contacts from my Address Book. Now I want to either delete all the contacts from my iPod and then enter the new ones or just have it eliminate them when it synchs.

So if I synch the iPod will all the old contacts from my iPod be transferred back to the Address Book on my iMac?

Can I delete the old contacts from my iPod first?

I tried help and was unable to find the topic covered.

Basically I removed all the Vcards
