Probably Simple Mac "Mail" Question

I apologize for being such an idiot but I JUST transitioned from PC to MAC a week ago and I wasn't very technologically literate to begin with. I cannot seem to figure out how to "preview" the messages in my Mail inbox. The list of emails appears but even if I click on one, nothing happens. I actually have to double click and open each individual email to preview the contents. Does anyone know how to make a preview screen appear below the list of emails in my inbox? THANK YOU!

Is there a dot at the center of the bottom border of your InBox window? If there is, drag that dot up to split the window and reveal the preview pane.

The mail app's message viewer window should have three main sections: the sidebar area with your inbox, the list of emails received in your inbox (assuming that is the mailbox you have selected in the sidebar) at the top of the main content area, and and area below a divider bar to show the selected email's content (see picture). If you don't have the section to show the email's content, I suspect the divider bar has been dragged all the way to the bottom of the window. Grab the little dot (seen in picture) and drag it up to reveal the email content viewer. Hope this makes sense and answers your question...
