Stuck in eject mode

I bought a Nikon 4000 ED on eBay. Ever since the first film strip it ejects when finished scanning but remains in eject mode. To continue the scanner has to be restarted and of course the Nikon Scan 4 restarted as well. I tried the adapter on another scanner where it worked great. Any idea how to fix this problem? I would prefer to keep the scanner if this can be fixed short of sending it to Nikon.

This is how I solved the problem. I had to return the Nikon 4000. I then bought a Nikon coolscan 5000 on eBay. I scanned my films. The results are stunning even though I did not upgrade the software nor use the Nikon feature to clean scratches. Having no more film to scan I resold the scanner on eBay. This is one time I won it all and everybody is happy, including me.
