Unfortunately, there are no turn-by-turn GPS direction apps available for the iPhone. TomTom said it was working on such a thing months ago, but there's been no movement on that front. I'm hoping we'll see something soon, but we just don't know.
I have a Garmin GPS that I take when I travel (at least when I know I'll be driving). You might want to consider a portable GPS unit for her, one that announces streets by name.

Dang it. I was afraid of that.
I'm surprised there's still no third party application. I don't think my wife is going to be too keen on paying for and carrying two devices, an iPhone and a GPS unit, when right now one device does the trick.
