Attach files to emails using Mac mail

I'm using the Mac mail program on my iMac (OSX 10.3) to attach image files to go to my web page editor. I need to send the files in .gif format and for some reason, when I drag the file icons from the desktop onto the body of the mail message, the file opens instead of showing up as the attached file icon. This occurs also when I select Attach from the pull down menu. Can anyone suggest how I can attach the files as the unopened file icons without them automatically opening up in the body of the email?

Thanks so much,

Jerry Patterson

When the person on the other end receives them, assuming he/she is not using Mail, he/she will see the closed icon, like normal.

you can change how the image appears to you by right clicking on the image in the body of the message and selecting view as icon.

Is there a way to do that if you don't have a right click?
