Imported clips don't show up in iMovie '08

I have a JVC Everio 155 and have connected by USB, as everyone recommends. The thumbnails are all grey and, although importing them (either one or all) seems to go through, they do not show up in imovie. The files end up on the hard drive but imovie can't seem to read them. What am I missing?

Thanks

The first thing is USB is not recommended for importing video files. Firewire is more ideal for the task. (USB uses short small bursts of data while firewire is a stream from camera to computer)
Second I am guessing it's a hard drive camera. What format is it recording in?
I know in the past JVC recored in .MOD files which is a window format. iMovie will not recognize it. you need to convert the files so imovie can edit them. But again I am just guess here.
what i did before apple supported hard drive cameras and this was years ago was copy the files from the hard drive (it will mount on your desktop when you plug it in) of the camera to a folder on my desk top.(Drag and drop)

Use Mpeg Streamclip create a batch list of the files on your desktop and convert the files to a format imovie can read. Weather its .DV or .MOV i have not used imovie '08.
But i think you'll also need Apples MPEG-2 Playback Component and Quicktime Pro. Not sure you can try with just the MPEG streamclip.

But again I am just guess here more information would help. Details please

Thanks. I mention USB as Apple recommends using it, whereas firewire is recommended for DV imports in real time. Yes, it is hard drive and the files on the camcorder are mod file. If iMovie does not recognize them, they why did Apple says in its support docs that this camcorder, gz-mg155, is compatible with iMovie 08? I thought the streamclip step was necessary with previous versions of iMovie but had been eliminated with iMovie '08.

Basically, I thought iMovie '08 was advertised as easing the importing and creation of movies, with some sacrifice to editing.
you are correct but first you have to understand codecs and compression h.264 is used to compress video for web delivery and HD video to a HD DVD (blue ray) . Mpeg-2 is used to compress SD or HD video for a SD DVD. I can compress a HD 10.96GB video with MPEG-2 compression and put it on a SD DVD in a letter box. Which compresses down to a 3 GB video.

I just looked at the specs of the JVC it says it's records in MPEG-2 format so it should be work okay with iMovie 08. According to Apple. But MPEG-2 as well as H.264 and AVCHD formats use compression technologies that are not designed to be edited to begin with.
Your clips are compressed on your cameras HHD If it was me I wouldn't want to edit in that format. .DV would give you a better quality for your video. Bigger files but better quality.

Have been able to transfer you video from camera to computer in the past?

iMovie will not recognize a .MOD file it is a window file. No version of iMovie will or ever will.
Convert your clips to .DV files.

Re: Imported clips don't show up in iMovie '08
Hello,

I am an amateur videographer/editor. I have been using the following for the past 2 years:
  • older iMac with older versions of iMovie and iDVD (2006)
  • Final Cut Pro 5
  • footage on mini-DV tapes shot on a Sony VX2000

I just purchased a Sony HDR-SR12 camcorder. I set the recording format to High Definition. My iMac successfully recognizes the harddrive and titles it "NO NAME", and it sees the MTS files. The problem is my version of iMovie and Final Cut Pro cannot read the MTS files. So, I reset the recording format to Standard Definition. Again, my iMac recognizes the harddrive, but it cannot read the MPG files.

I have read many forums about this problem. Some people advise to buy third-party software, to convert the files. Some people say iMovie 08 works - others say it doesn't. Some people say Final Cut Pro 6.0.3 works - others say it doesn't.

At this point, I don't know what the solution is. I have found a way to capture the footage off the camcorder, but with serious signal degradation. It looks like I shot the footage with the first video camera ever made - but it's all I got, for now.

If anyone finds the perfect solution, with no flaws, please tell me. Otherwise, I basically just bought a high def harddrive paperweight.

thanks - eric
